The brief
Create an interactive installation that encourages people to exercise outdoors, no matter their skill, strength or age.
Public exercise equipment has a self-selection problem: it is usually built for people who are already fit and already confident. The Municipality of The Hague wanted the opposite — something on the beach that a nine-year-old and a seventy-year-old would both walk up to without hesitating.
The approach
The installation had to survive a Dutch beach: salt air, sand in every seam, temperature swings, and completely unsupervised public use. That constraint shaped the engineering more than the interaction design did.
