What they needed
Form Follows Frequency is a Rotterdam studio designing and building horn-loaded and modular hi-fi speaker systems. They know speakers. What they asked us for was the electronics behind them: the control system and the amplification for several of their systems.
What makes it hard
The client is the expert on the thing the product is judged on. There is no room to be approximately right about audio for someone whose customers listen for a living.
The systems use high-end Hypex class-D modules, which are excellent and unforgiving — they expose whatever you put around them. And a high-power three-phase power system is a different class of engineering from a mains lead and a fuse: layout, protection and thermal behaviour all matter, and getting them wrong is not a cosmetic failure.
What we did
Developed the control electronics and the amplification system across several of their speaker systems, integrating the Hypex modules and building the three-phase power side around them.
